I like Stevil's style.

I've got more mileage out of Stevil's blogs these last couple of years to cover the earth twice. The wide way. His store is now up and running. Buy shit and then read his blog.

Cycling Meat-ins.

Mark Liebig sent out a mass e-mail a couple of days ago. Get on over to Mandan and then Bismarck if you care about any or all aspects of riding bike. The following is a copy of the e-mail for all who did not receive it yet. Bust a move.

Greetings!

I'm emailing to hopefully initiate a discussion regarding how bicycling interests can be promoted more effectively in the Bismarck/Mandan area.

Here's the context...

In the last 11 years I've lived in Mandan and Bismarck. During eight of those years I've been fortunate to have a role promoting bicycling interests with other like-minded folks, many of whom are listed in the address string on this email. It's been fun. Collectively, we've had a positive impact on both sides of the river, and - for the most part - we've been able to increase the number of bicycling opportunities as well as improve bike safety in our community (whether it be for road riding, mountain biking, or commuting).

Progress notwithstanding, we've lacked a unified, sustained effort when it comes to bicycling advocacy in Bismarck/Mandan. There are many reasons for this, but dissecting these reasons really isn't important (and most likely counterproductive). What's important is developing a vision and enacting a plan to improve the situation so we can more effectively communicate with each other. Doing so should translate to a greater understanding among bicycling interests, which in turn, should contribute to more effective advocacy efforts for bicyclists in our community.

Given that context, I would like to propose the creation of a single 'go to' organization for bicycling advocacy in Bismarck/Mandan. That said, I haven't a clear vision on the process for creating such an organization, nor do I have a plan on how a group like this could be structured to most effectively represent bicycling interests. All I know is, 1) your input is needed for something like this to get off the ground, and 2) input should be 100% inclusive of bicycling interests in Bismarck/Mandan (meaning anyone who rides a bike or has a vested interest in bicycling should have an opportunity to be heard). Yes, it's probably a bit naive to go about it this way, but if it's not a democratic, grassroots movement from the get-go, the effort will most likely fail.

To initiate a collective discussion on this proposal, two meetings have been scheduled this month. The first meeting will be held at the Mandan Public Library on February 17th from 6-9 p.m. The second meeting will be at the Bismarck Public Library (Meeting room A) on the following day (February 18th), also from 6-9 p.m. A volunteer will be sought out to facilitate both meetings (your suggestions for good meeting facilitators would be appreciated).

If this proposal resonates with you, please make every effort to attend one of the meetings. If your schedule doesn't allow you to attend either meeting, feel free to share your thoughts via email (your input will be shared with attendees at both meetings). Conversely, if you would like to be spared future emails about this topic, please let me know (...and for receiving this message, I apologize).

Finally, your help is needed to get the word out about these meetings. Please forward this message to others in the Bismarck/Mandan area who may be interested but not listed in the address string above.

Thanks for considering,

Mark Liebig
